Emerging Career Option: Synthetic Market Research
The work. The skills.
The route into the field.
A practical guide to the roles, companies and projects worth understanding before making your next career move.
See the roles and requirementsA career in asking better questions and testing the answers
A company wants to know which product idea deserves investment. Someone must define the audience, choose the evidence and design a useful test. Someone must also explain when the results are too weak to support a decision. Synthetic market research brings AI into that work.
For a career changer, the opportunity is worth examining. Aaru advertises roles in simulation design and evaluation alongside client deployment. Electric Twin advertises a research-engineering role. The work already extends beyond generating survey answers with a chatbot.[1][2]
One opening makes the distinction particularly clear. Aaru’s Simulation Architect role in Singapore asks for at least seven years of consumer-insights or market-research experience. It explicitly does not require a computer-science degree. This is an opportunity for experienced researchers to apply their judgment to a new method, rather than start their careers again.[3]
Synthetic market research is an emerging specialism within research, insights and applied AI. The job listings reviewed use several different titles. A sensible entry strategy is to build useful research capabilities and search for the work, rather than wait for one standard job title to appear.[1][3][2]
Build on research judgment
Learn to design suitable studies and explain what their results can support.
Build and test the systems
Develop the technical skills needed for reliable simulations and evaluation tooling.
Show a defensible project
Create a work sample with a clear question, inspectable evidence and an honest conclusion.
What is synthetic market research?
Synthetic market research uses AI or statistical models to estimate how an audience might respond to a question, product or scenario. It can produce survey-like records, simulated interviews or interactions between modeled people. These are generated outputs, not newly collected customer responses.[4][5]
Explore the field through Synthetic Market Research, which brings together companies, tools and industry resources.
Imagine testing three messages for an accounting application. A simulated audience might flag an unclear promise or suggest a question to explore. It does not establish that actual business owners saw the messages or would pay for the application. That distinction should remain visible in the researcher’s recommendation.
Prompted personas
A model answers from a described perspective. The prompt alone does not establish representativeness.
Grounded audience models
Interviews or other relevant records inform an audience model. The evidence and its coverage still need scrutiny.
Survey augmentation
A statistical model generates additional records from observed data. Validation matters more than row count.
Connected-agent simulation
Modeled people interact. Both their individual responses and their relationships need to be evaluated.
These approaches can overlap. A practitioner needs to understand what evidence supports the audience and how the specific method has been tested. A plausible biography is not proof that a model represents the people described.[4][5][6]
AI interviewing and synthetic respondents are different
An AI interviewer can ask questions of a real person. A synthetic respondent generates the answer itself. Listen Labs spans both activities: Salesforce’s September 2026 announcement describes real customer interviews and digital twins used to simulate responses before further testing. A researcher must keep those evidence types separate.[7]
Why businesses are interested, and where the work comes from
The appeal is practical: teams can explore more questions before committing to larger studies. MRS identifies hypothesis testing, scenario exploration and research pretesting among the potential uses. These applications give a researcher scope to improve a brief before fieldwork begins.[4]
Faster iteration can change the researcher’s responsibilities
In a published Reckitt case study, NIQ reported research timelines reduced by up to 65% and research costs reduced by 50%. These are company-reported results from a particular deployment. They are not a promise of equivalent savings in every project.[8]
Why teams are exploring faster research
NIQ’s Reckitt case study reported up to a 65% reduction in research timelines.[8] Baseline index: 100. Index at the largest reported reduction: 35. This is not the average result and the index does not represent calendar days.
View chart data
| Category | Value |
|---|---|
| Baseline | 100 |
| At upper-end reported reduction | 35 |
The career implication is a shift in the work a practitioner should prepare to do. When a team can run more tests, useful responsibilities include choosing which tests matter and deciding what deserves a human follow-up. Learn to manage a sequence of decisions, rather than just produce a final report.
Existing evidence can become more useful
Electric Twin describes building simulated audiences from customers’ existing data. Fairgen describes research tools that extend survey evidence and support analysis of under-sampled segments. That makes data preparation and understanding the limits of the original study relevant skills.[9][10]
More research does not necessarily mean more research jobs
Electric Twin’s case study with The Times reports a tenfold increase in research volume with the same insights-team headcount. It is a vendor-published customer example, not a sector-wide employment study. It shows why faster adoption should not automatically be interpreted as more vacancies.[11]
For a candidate, the better question is: which additional decisions could you help a team make responsibly? That is a stronger proposition than offering to generate more reports.
What would you actually do in this career?
Consider a hypothetical project for a subscription-software company. It wants to compare three ways of describing its product to small-business owners. The following is a suggested professional workflow, not a claim about a specific employer’s process.
| Stage | Your work | The deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Define the decision | Separate the choice of message from questions about pricing or demand. Agree what the study can influence. | A short research brief with a decision and its limits. |
| Define the audience | Specify who buys, who uses and who influences the purchase. Identify which groups the available evidence misses. | An audience definition and coverage assessment. |
| Prepare the evidence | Review permitted interview or survey data. Check its date, quality and relevance. | A source register and documented data preparation. |
| Run the study | Present comparable messages. Record model settings and question wording. Investigate unstable answers. | A reproducible set of simulations. |
| Evaluate the result | Compare against relevant human evidence or a suitable benchmark. Inspect differences across groups. | An evaluation report with errors and unresolved questions. |
| Make the recommendation | Explain what to test next and what the evidence cannot establish. | A decision memo and a human-validation plan. |
The final memo might recommend testing two messages with customers while dropping an unclear third option. It should not turn a simulated preference into a sales forecast without appropriate validation.
These tasks are consistent with the methodological responsibilities described in Aaru’s Simulation Architect opening. Its evaluation role separately emphasizes comparisons with observed outcomes and checking failures hidden by aggregate results.[12][3]
Who should consider this career?
You do not need to approach the field from the same starting point as everyone else. The following routes are suggested skill-development paths. They are not eligibility rules or placement promises.
| Your background | Experience you can build on | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Market research or consumer insights | Research design, questionnaires and client interpretation. | Synthetic-method evaluation, model limitations and repeatable AI workflows. |
| UX research or product marketing | Understanding user problems and the decisions a team needs to make. | Quantitative evaluation and a clear separation between simulated and observed behavior. |
| Content, SEO or communications | Asking questions, organizing evidence and explaining findings. | Research methods, statistics and genuine knowledge of a customer category. |
| Economics, psychology or social-science study | Hypothesis formation and understanding behavior. | Applied data analysis and a portfolio built around business decisions. |
| Data analysis or software engineering | Data handling, automation and technical testing. | Sampling, measurement and the commercial consequences of a wrong conclusion. |
A realistic route for content and SEO professionals
Clear writing is useful here. It helps with research briefs, interview guides and recommendations. It is not enough on its own. Someone who can rewrite a report still needs to learn how its evidence was collected and whether its conclusion follows from the data.
Start with one category you understand. Learn its buyers and the decisions they make. Then build a small research project that demonstrates how you tested a claim. The objective is to move from explaining other people’s conclusions to taking responsibility for a defensible conclusion of your own.
A realistic route for fresh graduates
Treat synthetic research as a specialism to develop alongside research or analytics foundations. Consider supervised research-assistant or analyst work as an entry route. Do not confuse an experienced simulation-methodology opening with an entry-level position that a short course can immediately unlock.
Which jobs already exist?
The examples below were reviewed on 15 October 2026. They show different kinds of work in the field, not a count of worldwide demand. These are published employer openings; their availability and requirements can change.
| Published role | Employer and location | What the posting asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Simulation Architect, APAC | Aaru · Singapore | Audience and study design, methodological explanation and validation. At least seven years in research or consumer insights; no CS degree required.[3] |
| Deployment Lead, APAC | Aaru · Singapore | Client scoping, delivery and coordination. At least four years in consulting, investment banking or strategic operations; research experience is an additional strength.[13] |
| Researcher, Evaluation | Aaru · New York | Rigorous measurement, benchmarks and tests of simulation quality. The posting accepts equivalent research depth without a PhD.[12] |
| Research Engineer | Electric Twin · London | AI-agent development, Python and backend engineering. More than seven years of experience, including at least one year of hands-on LLM work.[2] |
The research-facing and engineering routes have different requirements. In Aaru’s architect role, the emphasis is on methodological judgment. Electric Twin’s engineering role requires the ability to build and deploy systems. A career plan should reflect that difference.[3][2]
What does this mean for readers in India?
Do not read a global company list as a list of remote jobs available from India. The Aaru APAC roles reviewed are based in Singapore and require in-person work. Electric Twin’s posting describes four office days a week in London. Check location and work-authorization requirements before applying.[13][3][2]
A practical local route is to look for relevant work inside a research agency, an in-house insights team or a product organization. Search for responsibilities involving AI research and validation as well as titles such as research analyst or consumer-insights analyst. That is a search strategy, not evidence of a measured Indian hiring boom.
What about salaries?
One disclosed example is Electric Twin’s London Research Engineer opening at £80,000 to £120,000 a year. It is an experienced technical role with a stated experience threshold. It should not be presented as a beginner salary or converted into a promised Indian package.[2]
The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable India-wide salary benchmark for a standalone “synthetic market researcher” occupation. Evaluate the actual job level and responsibilities before drawing pay comparisons.
Which skills should you learn?
Research design
Learn to turn a broad question into a decision that can be studied. “Will this product succeed?” is too broad for a quick synthetic exercise. “Which part of this product description needs clarification before customer testing?” is a more manageable starting point.
Statistics and evaluation
Understand sampling bias and percentage-point differences. Learn to compare rankings as well as absolute errors. A holdout is evidence kept separate while a method is being developed, then used to test it. It loses that purpose when its answers influence the model or repeated tuning decisions.
Aaru’s evaluation posting makes these skills tangible through its focus on calibration, subgroup performance and comparisons with observed behavior. This is work in measurement, not simply prompt writing.[12]
AI workflow and data handling
Learn to structure questions and preserve a record of inputs, model versions and outputs. Be able to trace a result to the evidence that informed it. Start with a platform appropriate to the task; add technical depth as your target role requires.
For engineering roles, the bar is higher. Electric Twin’s posting includes Python and backend systems alongside retrieval-augmented generation, which supplies relevant retrieved material to a model. It also asks for experience evaluating model output.[2]
Commercial and category knowledge
Choose an industry and understand how its buying decisions work. A useful audience definition for enterprise software must distinguish users from budget holders. A result that ignores the actual decision-maker can be misleading even when its charts look convincing.
Clear recommendations
Practice writing a one-page memo that separates the finding from your interpretation. State the decision it supports and the decision it does not support. A brief explanation of a real limitation is more useful than an impressive-looking accuracy number without context.
Responsible use of data
The ICC/ESOMAR Code calls for appropriate methods and disclosure of AI or synthetic-data use. It also requires researchers to explain limitations and protect confidential research material. Build those practices into the project from the beginning.[14]
For further reading, explore research standards and synthetic-data guidance collected by Synthetic Market Research.
Use data you are permitted to use. Check the proposed tool and workflow with the responsible owner before uploading customer material. A synthetic output does not make the source data non-confidential.
Companies to understand, and what their funding tells you
A career shortlist should include different kinds of business. Some companies build simulation systems. Others bring synthetic capabilities into research platforms or client-facing services. The profiles below are selected examples, not an employer ranking or a list of confirmed vacancies at every company.
Browse the synthetic market research company directory to explore providers and follow their product and research sources.
The suggested learning areas identify what to study in each offering. They do not imply that the company has advertised a role with that exact description.
Simile
Simile builds simulations of human behavior for organizational decisions.[15]
What to study: Study audience grounding and how a simulation is evaluated. Its product is a useful case for understanding the difference between a modeled response and an observed outcome.
Aaru
Aaru offers population simulation and lists roles across research, deployment and commercial functions.[1]
What to study: Compare the methodological, client-delivery and engineering responsibilities. Do not assume these roles require the same background.

Electric Twin
Electric Twin builds synthetic audiences using customer evidence and AI. Its careers page describes a team spanning research, engineering and insights.[9][16]
What to study: Look at how a platform connects existing data with repeated research questions. Study both the data preparation and the user-facing workflow.
Evidenza
Evidenza applies synthetic customer research to marketing and commercial planning, including difficult-to-recruit business audiences.[17]
What to study: Practice defining a specific buying role and turning a business question into a research brief.
Fairgen
Fairgen’s offering includes survey augmentation and AI-based consumer research.[10]
What to study: Study what changes when additional records are generated from existing evidence. Learn to evaluate performance on under-represented groups.
Artificial Societies
Artificial Societies models connected populations for applications including communications and strategic decisions.[6]
What to study: Examine how individual responses and interactions between people are tested separately.
Qualtrics and PureSpectrum
Their 2025 partnership combines synthetic research with established data and panel infrastructure.[18]
What to study: Understand how human evidence and modeled outputs fit into the same research programme without being confused.
NIQ BASES AI Screener
NIQ’s product uses consumer evidence and synthetic respondents to evaluate early product ideas.[19]
What to study: Study how concept screening informs a next step. Keep it separate from final launch validation or a forecast of sales.

Listen Labs
Salesforce’s September 2026 announcement describes Listen Labs’ interviewing and digital-twin capabilities. The announced acquisition remained subject to closing conditions.[7]
What to study: Learn to label whether an answer came from a person or a simulation. The distinction matters even when one platform provides both.
Brand images identify the businesses discussed. They remain the property of their owners and do not imply endorsement or a recruitment partnership.
Investment is a signal of company development, not guaranteed employment
Simile announced a Series B of more than $200 million. Redpoint disclosed an $80 million Series A for Aaru. Electric Twin’s February announcement described a $10 million new round, bringing its cumulative funding to $14 million. Listen Labs raised a $69 million Series B, reaching $100 million in cumulative funding.[20][21][9][22]
Selected funding rounds show investment, not job counts
Primary company and investor disclosures.[20][21][9][22] Values show selected round amounts, not total funding, valuation or market share. Simile’s bar is plotted at its disclosed lower bound of $200 million; the actual announcement says more than $200 million. Listen Labs also operates in human-interview research. Reviewed 15 October 2026.
View chart data
| Category | Value |
|---|---|
| Simile | More than $200m |
| Aaru | $80m |
| Listen Labs | $69m |
| Electric Twin | $10m |
These amounts describe different companies and financing rounds. They do not measure the size of the synthetic-research market or the number of jobs it will create. Listen Labs also works in human-interview research, so its financing is not exclusively funding for synthetic respondents.[7][22]
For career planning, use funding news as a reason to investigate the product and team. A suitable vacancy and evidence that the employer values your skills are more informative than a large funding headline.
How do you tell a useful simulation from a convincing answer?
This is one of the most important skills to demonstrate in a portfolio. A result should be judged against the decision it is meant to support. Ranking three concepts correctly is different from estimating how many people will buy them.
Why evaluating the result is a professional skill
View chart data
| Concept | Human benchmark | Modeled result | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concept A | 20% | 40% | +20 pp |
| Concept B | 35% | 55% | +20 pp |
| Concept C | 50% | 70% | +20 pp |
In this hypothetical example, both sets of results rank the concepts identically. Every modeled purchase-intent figure is nevertheless 20 percentage points above the human benchmark. That may preserve a shortlist while producing a poor estimate of demand.
Read the benchmark behind the headline
Stanford HAI describes interview-grounded agents that replicated survey responses 85% as accurately as people repeated their own answers two weeks later. This is a comparison with human self-consistency on a survey benchmark. It is not an 85% absolute accuracy rate for predicting product sales.[23]
For a work sample, explain the audience and outcome being evaluated. Report meaningful errors and inspect differences across important groups. Do not claim universal validity from one successful test.
Keep generated records separate from recruited people
Know how many people actually answered
View chart data
| Record type | Rows | Share of file |
|---|---|---|
| Human records | 200 | 20% |
| Generated records | 800 | 80% |
A file containing 200 human responses and 800 generated records contains 1,000 rows. It does not contain answers from 1,000 independently recruited people. Generated records may have a role in a validated modeling method. They do not justify using a conventional survey margin of error as though the human sample had grown to 1,000.
Know when to request more human evidence
Novel products and poorly represented groups deserve particular caution. A fluent simulated answer can hide missing context. MRS warns that synthetic participants lack lived experience and can reproduce biases. Its guidance stresses testing and refreshing synthetic samples with real customers.[4]
A useful researcher can say that the evidence is insufficient, explain why and propose the next test. That is a professional contribution, not a failure to make the tool work.
Build a portfolio that shows how you think
A portfolio should let another person inspect your question, evidence and judgment. The three projects below are suggested exercises. They are not examples of client work already completed.
Project 1: A message test with a clear boundary
Choose a familiar product category and write three competing messages. Define the intended buyer and document the evidence used to describe that audience. Run an exploratory simulation and explain which questions it raises.
Where appropriate and permitted, seek feedback from a small group of real people to challenge the interpretation. A small convenience group can expose problems, but it cannot establish a representative market estimate. Submit the brief and a comparison memo with the limitations clearly stated.
Project 2: An evaluation that includes failures
Use a dataset you are permitted to analyze. Separate development work from evaluation before fitting or refining the method. Compare a simple baseline with the synthetic approach and explain where the latter adds value or fails.
Published benchmarks may already appear in a model’s training data. A reproduction using public data is therefore a learning exercise, not necessarily a clean test of future prediction. A stronger design uses newly collected or appropriately restricted holdout evidence and prevents its reuse during development.
Show absolute error alongside ranking performance. Include subgroup results where the evidence supports them. An honest failure analysis is a more informative work sample than a polished “95% accurate” claim with no defined test.
Project 3: A repeatable research workflow
Build a small workflow that accepts a brief and checks whether the evidence is suitable. It should preserve the questions and settings, then generate a report with observed and simulated material labeled separately.
An AI coding assistant can help implement the workflow. You still need to test it. Demonstrate what happens when the input is incomplete or a model returns an unusable answer. Do not let a failed run silently become a client-ready result.
A four-week starting plan
This is a suggested portfolio sprint for someone beginning to explore the field. It is not a claim that four weeks substitutes for the experience required in senior job postings.
Define a decision
Choose a category. Study the buyer and write a brief with a specific question and clear limits.
Run a small study
Prepare permitted evidence. Document the audience and keep a record of your questions and settings.
Evaluate and challenge
Compare with a suitable benchmark. Investigate errors and explain what remains uncertain.
Present and improve
Write the decision memo. Seek critical feedback and make the work reproducible.
By the end, aim to have one small project another researcher can inspect. Include a short decision memo and enough documentation for someone to understand what happened. Keep a record of corrections rather than hiding them.
How to turn the skills into a career
Add the specialism to an existing role
For an employed researcher, propose a limited pilot around a low-risk decision. Agree on a human benchmark and compare the usefulness of the results. Keep the normal quality review. This gives you a concrete example of adopting a method responsibly.
Apply for a role that matches your starting point
An experienced insights practitioner might study a methodological or client-facing route. An engineer might target research infrastructure or evaluation tooling. A new entrant should prioritize supervised analyst work while building the relevant foundations. Use current job descriptions to identify the gaps in your evidence of ability.
Offer a defined service, not a promise to predict customers
For independent work, begin with a bounded deliverable such as an exploratory message screen or a research-workflow audit. Agree on what the client receives and what still needs human validation. Do not sell a generated report as a survey of customers who were never recruited.
Choose training by what you will be able to demonstrate
Look for assignments covering research design and evaluation. The programme should require you to explain a failed result and disclose the evidence behind a successful one. Tool access and a certificate are not enough to establish professional competence.
Is synthetic market research worth pursuing?
It is worth serious consideration for someone interested in customer decisions and willing to learn research methods. The employer examples show that there is work in client delivery and methodological interpretation as well as engineering. They do not establish a mass-market entry-level occupation or guaranteed demand in every country.[1][13][3][2]
For experienced researchers, the strongest argument is that existing judgment can remain useful in an AI-enabled workflow. For career changers, the opportunity is to develop that judgment through projects and supervised practice. Neither route is helped by pretending that generating responses is the same as understanding a market.
Start with a question you can investigate. Produce evidence someone else can inspect. Explain what the result can and cannot support. That is a practical foundation for a career in synthetic market research.

Research methodology
This career guide is a secondary-research synthesis based on professional guidance, research publications, company announcements and employer job descriptions reviewed through 15 October 2026. It covers synthetic respondents, survey augmentation and behavioral simulation used in commercial research. Selected company profiles illustrate different approaches; they are not a complete census or an employer ranking.
Job titles, locations and stated requirements come from the cited employer pages. They demonstrate particular role designs rather than total hiring demand. The salary example is one experienced London engineering vacancy, not a salary survey or an Indian compensation forecast. Suggested career routes and portfolio projects are author recommendations. No recruiter interviews, placement study or primary labor-market survey was conducted.
Funding round amounts are distinguished from cumulative funding and valuation. The funding chart uses a lower-bound value for Simile. The NIQ timeline chart indexes a company-reported upper-end reduction to 100. The correlation and record-composition charts are hypothetical teaching examples. Case-study results are attributed to their publishers and are not treated as independent audits or universal outcomes. Product features, vacancies and transaction status may change after the review date.
