What is a marketing engineer?

A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds working systems instead of only running them. A content writer hands over an article. A marketing engineer hands over the pipeline that researches, drafts, checks and publishes a hundred of them, and the dashboard that shows which ones earned traffic.

The title overlaps with marketing technologist, growth engineer and martech engineer. It is not the same as a technical marketing engineer, who explains technical products to buyers, or marketing engineering as an academic field, which applies decision models to marketing problems.

How far has writing demand fallen?

UpHunt, a freelance job tracker, collected 3,253,248 public Upwork posts from January 2025 to June 2026. Of those, 104,774 sat in four writing categories. Monthly writing postings dropped from 8,002 in January 2025 to 3,698 in June 2026, a fall of 53.8%. All Upwork postings fell 34.5% over the same months, so writing fell about 19 points faster than the platform.

The charts show what is left. Content writing lost the most (down 63.3%) and editing and proofreading lost the least (down 17.5%), so editing grew from 17.1% to 30.5% of writing demand. The median fixed-price budget stayed at $100. Clients post fewer writing jobs; the median advertised fixed-price budget did not rise.

UpHunt sells job-alert software. Its category field is empty on about 13% of posts, so its category counts are lower bounds.

Is this only an Upwork effect?

No. A study of about 1.4 million freelance listings from July 2021 to July 2023, reported by The Decoder and Harvard Business Review, found that writing postings fell 30.37%, software and web development 20.62%, and engineering 10.42% relative to manual-intensive jobs within eight months of ChatGPT’s launch. Image creation and design postings fell 17.01% following the release of image-generating tools. The authors, Ozge Demirci, Jonas Hannane and Xinrong Zhu, measured these changes against manual-intensive jobs. Their paper was published in Management Science in 2025. A separate analysis of Upwork listings by Bloomberry, from November 2022 to February 2024, found writing volume down 33%.

What are company leaders saying?

Micha Kaufman, CEO of Fiverr, told staff in a May 2025 memo that AI is coming for their jobs, including his own. His list named programmers, designers, lawyers, customer support reps and finance staff, among others. Writers were not on it. Fiverr then cut about 250 jobs, roughly 30% of staff, in September 2025.

“AI is coming for your jobs.”

“Heck, it's coming for my job too.”

Jack Dorsey co-founded Twitter and ran it until 2021. He now runs Block, which on 26 February 2026 announced cuts of more than 4,000 of its 10,000-plus employees. Both leaders described using AI tools with smaller teams.

What do writers say happened to their work?

“People are looking for the cheapest solution, and that's not a person, that's a robot.”

Lipkin was the only writer at a start-up when managers began saying ChatGPT was cheaper. Fein charged $60 an hour. His largest client switched to ChatGPT, and his other nine contracts were canceled soon after. In August 2026 Moneycontrol reported a Reddit post from an Indian copywriter who said his income fell from about ₹2 lakh to ₹40,000 a month. Those figures are self-reported and unverified.

What should a marketing engineer course teach?

Judge a course by what you can ship at the end. A useful one covers:

  • Automation: connecting APIs, webhooks and scheduled jobs so a task runs without you.
  • AI workflows: prompting, retrieval and evaluation, plus catching wrong output before it is published.
  • Data and tracking: analytics events, SQL and attribution, so you can show what worked.
  • Web basics: HTML, landing pages and CMS changes you make yourself.
  • A portfolio: two or three deployed systems with measured results.

A course that ends with a certificate and no deployed work gives a hiring manager little to check.

Frequently asked questions

What is a marketing engineer course?

A marketing engineer course trains marketers to build and run the technical systems behind marketing: automation, tracking, AI workflows and web pages. A digital marketing course, by contrast, focuses on running campaigns with existing tools.

Do I need to code to become a marketing engineer?

Basic scripting and SQL help, and most courses start there. The aim is to read and edit code and to direct AI coding tools, not to become a software engineer.

Are content writers still being hired?

Yes, in smaller numbers. Upwork still had 3,698 writing postings in June 2026, and editing and proofreading held up best. Postings asking to humanize AI content numbered 184 in the first half of 2026, too few to replace the lost work.
